110 participants from 35 school districts, 7 post-secondary institutions in 3 provinces from across Canada came together at the 2004 Summer Institute. Set in the picturesque Rocky Mountains of Canmore, Alberta, the third annual Summer Institute climbed to new heights in both its scope and breadth!


Main Seminars

Richard Gaskell and Brad Johnson, The Galileo Educational Network Association: "Pushing the Boundaries"
Addressing the educational users of technologies in enhancing and moving education forward. Participants engaged in a series of focus questions concerning situated technologies.
 
Candance Saar and Sharon Friesen: "Establishing a Meaningful Culture of Use"
Sharing their personal stories fo three teachers' preliminary foray into the world of video-conferencing, Candace and Sharon demonstrated how technologies can be used to take learning to a new level: going beyond the dictates of the curriculum.
 
Dee Elder and Richard Briggs: "Broadband Impact"
Sharing insights from their experiences with video-conferencing over broadband and addressed the impact of this technology on professional and student learning.
 
Wayne Sproule, Ray Bowers and Sandeep Thakrar: "Engaging Video-Conferencing Classrooms: Teach for Effective Learning"
The case study focused on the qualities of an engaging classroom and how these may be enhanced with the use of video-conferencing. They also shared their experiences as facilitators in a job-embedded, professional development workshop created in conjunction with the Ontario Science Centre.

65 teachers, faculty and private sector ABEL partners attended the Summer Institute. Participants shared their experiences within ABEL, planned for the upcoming school year and developed the foundation for new collaborative projects and curricular events.

Approximately 70 to 80 people attended the first annual Summer Institute. The 2002 ASI included learning, research and communications components and delegates were exposed to the ABEL community, technology applications for classroom use and a video-conference event provided participants with all the opportunities available.
