Additional Qualification Computers in the Classroom - Parts I, 2, Specialist

Teacher participation and work in ABEL meet the requirements of the Computers in the Classroom program. An assessment component is required in order to successfully complete the qualification.

Your Advantage: Computers in your Classroom
AQ: Computers in the Classroom - Part I

Using a computer in your classroom to increase your resources and enhance student skills is a great advantage to you as a teacher. It is expected that you will have some computer experience, as the program will provide minimal instruction in computer skills. You will use a hands on approach that will enable you, whether in elementary of secondary schools, to successfully integrate computer technologies across the curriculum. This program also provides a review of hardware and software basics and an exploration of materials, programs, and issues related to the integration of computer technology into your curriculum. You will learn how to access and use Internet resources, web sites, and the use of programs such as desktop publishing. You will review criteria for choosing appropriate curriculum software for your classroom, investigate software that can be run on a variety of platforms, both Mac and PC, and explore ethical issues related to computer use in the classroom.

Beyond Basics: Using Computers in your Classroom
AQ: Computers in the Classroom - Part 2

In this program, you acquire the skills needed to use computers even more effectively in your classroom. The aim is to help you to improve your practice so that your students become more effective learners. This program provides advanced instruction in the use of the computer as a cross-curricular tool that complements both program and instruction. It also enhances skills in the use of word processing, desktop publishing, and information and retrieval systems (spreadsheets and databases) in both elementary and secondary schools. In this program, you will review educational websites, send email to colleagues, familiarize yourself with censorship programs, download files, and design and build a web page. You will explore issues of integrating the computer into regular classroom curriculum.

Leadership in Implementing Computer Technology
AQ: Computers in the Classroom - Specialist

The Specialist Program further enhances your skills in the use of hardware and tool-based software, by building upon your foundation of Parts 1 and 2. This program emphasizes leadership in advancing the integration of the computer into the school curriculum and classroom programs. You will have opportunities to connect cutting-edge technology and software to the school curriculum, analyze the implementation of the school's computer plan with a view to future planning, develop computer-based curriculum units, and to develop skills that enable you to deliver computer in-service programs for colleagues.

Information on registration for these programs is available in the ABEL community.
